    Summary of the participation:

    ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies – ICTs.     October 16th 2018 two partners from EasyTV (CCMA and UAB) attended the IRG AVA meeting. The IRG-AVA studies topics related to audiovisual media accessibility and aims at developing draft Recommendations for "Access Systems" that can be used for all media delivery systems, including broadcast, cable, Internet, and IPTV

    Pilar Orero (UAB) and Francesc Mas (CCMA) presented the new advances achieved since last meeting in EasyTV project, focused on innovation, adaptation and improvement of the processes of production and distribution of accessibility services in the new environments of digital consumption.

    At the same time the presentation also showed the future steps of EasyTV project which will allow the creation and recommendation of new standards in the area of audiovisual accessibility, from production to distribution and consumption, and the elimination of barriers to access content thanks to the introduction of collaborative work techniques.

    On Thursday, October 10, Francesc Mas, project manager of the Research and Innovation Engineering of the CCMA, participated in the technological conferences organized within the framework of the ASBU EBU Week of Technology to present the new challenges in accessibility to the audiovisual content in which the CCMA works. The conferences took place at the premises of the Arabian States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) in Tunis.

    In his speech, Francesc Mas presented the various projects that have allowed the CCMA to have a recognized system of production, management and dissemination of accessibility services, such as subtitling and audiodescription. He also summarized the existing recommendations and guidelines that allow to offer content of accessibility of quality without the cost being increased.

    In the same session, Mas showed the works carried out within the EasyTV project, which will allow the automated production of accessible content to increase .

    Accessibility is an indisputable right for everyone that allows audiovisual content of the media to be available to all citizens, regardless of their sensory capacities. With this objective, Arab States, through the Arabian States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) and in collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU-UER), have initiated a project to introduce accessibility services to all its public television channels.

    Summary of the participation: During the dates 8th-9th October 2018 the 9th edition of AMADIS Conference was held in Madrid organized by the Royal Board on Disability (Real Patronato sobre Discapacidad), Carlos III University of Madrid and the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC: Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia). The event took place at the Headquartes of CNMC in the Madrid street of Alcalá. The main theme of the Conference is the accessibility services in broadcasting and audiovisual media and the innovation in accessibility technologies applies to cultural, formative and accessible media environments for people with sensitive dissabilities.

    Within the programme of the Conference, the group GATV of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid actively participated with the presentation of the advances in the H2020 European Project EasyTV: Easing the access of Europeans with disabilities to converging media and content, coordinated by the Spanish University. The presentation was the responsibility of the researcher Silvia Uribe where she highlighted the technologies and main innovations implemented in the context of the project, included the advances in the new standard for Connected TV HbbTV 2.0.1, which allows the interconnection and synchronization of broadcasted contents with second screen devices for the consumption of accessible contents to improve the Quality of Experience (QoE) of people with dissabilities.

    The lecture was transmitted by streaming through the internet, and simultaneously translated into sign language and subtitles.

    The review of trends in research and technological development in the context of audiovisual accessibility for people with dissabilities took place in the conference, with special attention to the tools and processes for quality assessment in the application of captioning, subtitling and audiodescription.

    Event: The EC has been increasingly funding media projects on accessiblity. In the H2020 Framework ICT19 Call from 2017 three projects were funded: ImAc, EasyTV, and Content4ALL, with an additional project funded last year MEMAD. The project UMAQ lead by Gian Maria Greco and Pilar Orero at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona organised a round table with representatives from the H2020 accessibility funded projects and Gion Linder Head of the EBU Accessibility Expert Group.

    Place: The round table will take place in Berlin on Friday 5th October.


  • Presentation in Terpsichore summer school in ICL 2018 conference
